Best Indoor Plants for Your Home – Greener Living

Wondering what the best plants for your home are?  Of course you are, that’s why you’re here! Indoor plants are absolutely amazing for making your home (literally) greener.  They not only bring life to your space but they can have great benefits for the environment including purifying the very air you breathe. The downside? Plants, especially indoor plants, can be really difficult to care for. Have no fear though, we’ve done the dirty work and have compiled a list of the top 6 houseplants for your home that won’t require all of your time and attention.

  • Aloe Vera- We thought we’d start with something everyone’s pretty familiar with. Aloe vera is a succulent which tend to be very easy to care for since they prefer a drier climate so don’t worry about forgetting to water it!  These little guys like a lot of sun and they’re great for removing benzene (which is used to make many products used in the home like plastics, rubbers, dyes, etc.) and formaldehyde from the air.  Bonus points because you can also use this house plant to heal cuts and burns!
  • Peace Lily- This beauty brings a lot to the table.  Not only is this a stunning plant that doesn’t require much sunlight, it is a powerhouse for removing a laundry list of nasties from your air.  Peace lilies help purify through toxins like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and benzene.  When kept healthy and happy they can also help combat toluene, xylene, and ammonia which are present in many everyday products.
  • Spider Plant-  You’ve probably heard of, or at least seen a spider plant before. These are relatively easy to care for; they like bright light and a good amount of water throughout the hot summer months but the benefits are worth work.  Spider plants battle formaldehyde, toluene, xylene, and carbon monoxide.
  • Dwarf Banana- This decor staple not only filters formaldehyde out of the air it also replenishes your air with moisture! Don’t let the name fool you, this big guy needs quite a bit of attention to thrive.  Lots of sun, fertilizer, and water will make him a happy camper but don’t expect him to sprout any bananas (he’s not fruit bearing)!
  • Golden Pothos- This vine is SO easy to grow, it only needs a little light, small amounts of water, and to be untangled every now and then. NOW, it i toxic when eaten so keep that in mind (also, why are you eating it?). This pretty fella will stay green even with every little sunlight and you’ll get the added benefits of filtering out xylene, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and trichloroethylene. You can also easily trim this guy to start other plants for FREE.
  • Snake Plant- This is one of our favorites. The snake plant is so hardy and difficult to kill, no matter how much of a green thumb you’re lacking.  This house plant will not only filter out a lot of the nasties listed above, it will also give off oxygen at night.  This neat little feature makes it perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms.  Make sure you keep it in bright light and remember to water it every now and then, other than that though he’d probably prefer to be left alone.

All of these indoor plants have a ton of benefits that will make your space more pleasant and comfortable.  Bringing the outdoors in not only brings a “lived in” feeling to your home, it will make your home more comfortable.  This is one of the simplest ways to go green and make a positive impact for the environment.  It may seem small but these plants pack a big eco punch.  Which plant are you most inspired to add to your home this spring?
