Top Halloween Tips: Decor and Candy

We here at Kind Home Solutions aren’t just serious house painters, we also love having fun! One of the seasons we love most is Fall, and that includes Halloween! It’s that time of year, ghosts and ghouls.  Halloween time! Will you end up have the best spooky night ever or will you wake up November 1st with TP hanging from your trees?  We’ve got the top Halloween tips to make sure your Halloween is no tricks, all treats this year.

Keep Things Festive

Not everyone wants to go all out with halloween decorations.  The cost and hassle alone is enough to drive anyone mad. Fear not; we’ve got you covered.  Luckily you don’t need expensive or extravagant decorations to get into the spooky spirit. We’re huge fans of simple yet effective decor options and we’ve put together just a few to explore.

  • Pick up some pumpkins.  This one may be obvious but it’s a staple which makes it worth mentioning.  Skip the expensive pumpkin patch and hit up King Soopers or your closest grocery store for affordable, hasslefree pumpkins. We recommend getting a few that vary in size and style to keep the look dynamic.  Once you have your pumpkins you can carve, paint, bedazzle, or just keep them as they come. (Bonus; if you choose to do classic pumpkins you can keep them out through November as well!)
  • Toss up a wreath.   When you’re trying to get away with minimal decorations it’s important to get the biggest bang for your buck.  Prioritizing a main focal point like your front door can help maximize impact while keeping costs low. You can DIY a wreath or pick one up from Target, Walmart, or a local craft store.  We’ve linked a few of our favorites below.

  • Spin up some cobwebs. This is an oldie but a goodie. Remember those bags of cobwebs you probably had up on your house as a kid?  Well, it’s time to pick one up and get to work. This may not seem like much but it will really help tie everything together and get your home Halloween ready! You can find these in store on online; here’s an option from Amazon.

Keep the Lights On (and Skip Leaving Out the Candy Bowl)

We all know how tempting it can be to take the easy way out and just leave out a candy bowl but that will go much quicker without any supervision.  Although the intention behind it is great it’s just far too likely that some bad apples will scoop up all the candy at once. If you plan to hand out candy we highly recommend being engaged in some way.  Make sure your lights are on so the kiddos know to head your way or you can make an event of the evening and sit outside to greet your trick or treaters.

Want to get in on the tricks yourself?  Consider dressing up as a scarecrow or something similar with a mask so people think you might just be a prop.  When they get close it’s your chance to give them a little scare. That’s what Halloween is kind of about right?

Choose Your Candy Wisely

This may be the most important of our top Halloween tips and is part of building a reputation as THE house to visit on Halloween.  Having the right candy is critical to a successful Halloween night and we’ve done the research for you.  Here are the most (and least) popular Halloween candies this year according to CandyStore.com.

Ten Most Hated Candies in 2019:

  • Candy Corn
  • Circus Peanuts
  • Mary Jane Taffy
  • Wax Coke Bottles
  • Necco Wafers
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Smarties
  • Licorice
  • Good and Plenty
  • Bit-O-Honey

Top Ten Most Popular Halloween Candies of 2019:

  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
  • Snickers
  • Twix
  • Kit Kats
  • M & M’s
  • Nerds
  • Butterfinger
  • Sour Patch Kids
  • Skittles
  • Hershey Bars

It definitely looks like chocolate reigns supreme this year which isn’t much of a surprise. As a pro tip we also recommend avoiding things like granola bars or raisins.  Although they don’t make the most hated list they certainly aren’t what kids are out on the hunt for and you may end up with a TP’d house.

We hope our list of our top Halloween tips helped you enjoy the season more! What’s your favorite Halloween candy? What are you dressing as this year? Whatever you’re doing, have fun!
